A few weeks after its Nov. 1 takeover of GBB, France’s third-largest manufacturer of children’s shoes, the Austrian Shoe & Shirt group has announced the elimination of 125 out of the 260 jobs at its facilities at Beaupréau, in the Cholet region. GBB, which sells also the Catimini line under license, is barely breaking even right now. Shoe & Shirt had intended to acquire GBB in part to obtain better conditions from its suppliers in Asia and other parts of the world. The company already owns Richter in Austria and Jela in Germany. It took over recently Siesta Shoes in Hungary. Its other factories in Austria, Slovakia and Hungary employ 789 people, but much of the product is imported from other sources.
