Adelchi has broken up with its former manufacturing partner in Bangladesh, Apex Adelchi, which has set up its own independent operation, and formed a partnership with another shoe manufacturer, Bengal Shoe Industries Ltd. (BSIL), that has a three-year-old, state-of-the-art factory employing 1,000 people at Rakhala. It is a subsidiary of a 30-year-old tannery, Bengal leather Complex. The Italian company, which is still run by Adelchi Sergio, now makes about 6,000 pairs a day in Bangladesh and a similar volume of finished shoes in Albania, using facilities that are still owned by his family. The production in Romania and Bulgaria has been stopped. Meanwhile, Sergio's 32-year-old son is taking on more responsibilities within the group while managing a new brand of high-end shoes made in Apulia, called Sergio's, which showed its second seasonal collection at Pitti Uomo in Florence earlier this month.
