Allen Edmonds will keep manufacturing its men’s shoes in the USA, but it has invested $1 million to convert its factory in Port Washington, Wiscounsin, to cell manufacturing. The conveyor belt is gone. Grouped into clusters, workers put together small lots of shoes just in time from start to finish, like some other manufacturers of men’s shoes in Europe. The US company says it discarded the option of offshore sourcing mainly because of logistical and quality issues.
