Amazon's sale of rubber sandals bearing the face of Mahatma Gandhi, India's independence icon, has triggered an outcry in India and calls for the items to be removed from the website. India's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Amazon “should respect Indian sensitivities and sentiments.” Amazon's country manager for India, Amit Agarwal, responded by reaffirming the company's commitment to its Indian relationship. The sandals, available from a third-party vendor at a price of $16.99, were eventually removed from the platform. Sales through third-party vendors reportedly account for nearly 50 percent of the units purchased on Amazon.
