APICCAPS, the Portuguese shoe manufacturers’ association, is organizing a trade mission to India in late Spring to study possible subcontracting deals and the procurement of leather and components. As reported in the last issue, Aerosoles is setting up two factories for components and shoes in India, which is attracting more attention from European firms as an alternative to China and Vietnam in view of possible trade protection measures. As a market, India is also getting more attention from the brands following the government’s recent introduction of new regulations that allow the establishment of single-brand shops controlled by foreign firms. Indian interests must still own majority control of any multi-brand retail operation in the country.
