Assomac, the tanning machinery manufacturers' association of Italy, elected Giovannie Bagini of the Sabal Group to a two-year term as president at its meeting at the end of June. It also chose Gabriella Marchioni Bocca, from the blade manufacturer Lamebo, to be its new vice president. At the meeting, it was disclosed the Italy accounts for 50 percent of the world's machinery for making leather, leathergoods and footwear. China was a distant second with 18 percent, and Taiwan makes 13 percent. Assomac members said that Italian companies make 70 percent of the world market of tanning machinery, and last year production rose by 40 percent. Exports were up by 49.7 percent. The association expects a slowdown in the second half of this year, though up until now performance has been good.
