Improved sales of dress shoes, boots and branded athletic products helped Bakers Footwear Group in the third quarter, but couldn’t quite get the company to turn around completely. Sales were up by 1.9 percent to $41.1 million, with a 4.5 percent jump in comparable store sales, but Bakers nonetheless had a net loss for the quarter of $8.3 million. This was an improvement, however, over its $15.3 million loss in the same period last year.
The gross profit margin more than doubled to 21.9 percent from 8.7 percent last year. The chain has 241 Bakers and Wild Pair stores. The company said it expected improved operating results for the remainder of the financial year.
