Bata has standardized the packaging of its shoes sold around the world, and made it more sustainable. Before, the individual contract factories were getting the shoe boxes made by local suppliers, but now all the shoeboxes are contracted out to two companies that work with shoebox manufacturers close to where Bata's contractors are located. The amount of cardboard used in the boxes has been trimmed back substantially. The wrapping paper around the boxes is made from 100 percent recycled materials. The boxes are printed with water-based inks, and they contain no glues, coatings or staples.
