Birkenstock has informed customers that there could be delays in deliveries because of a sudden sales boom, particularly in the U.S. and other countries. As a result, Birkenstock's Alsa subsidiary will not transfer the production of footbeds and soles from Steinau-Uerzell to another site in Görlitz, as it had originally planned as part of a program intended to double the production rate by 2020. Rather, the company will manufacture the highly demanded products at both sites, making prototypes and small runs at Steinau-Uerzell and carrying out mass production in the east German town. A new deal with the staff at Steinau-Uerzell calls for keeping 200 jobs there until 2019, with an option to reduce them to 160 in 2017, but 20 other employees may be laid off.
