Birkenstock is taking on a strong presence in France and is opening a store in Paris’s young-oriented Marais district. At the same time the German Birkenstock group, which also trades through the Footprints and Tatami brands, is making some new strides in Asia. Working through a partner in Taiwan, it has found agents in Beijing and Shanghai, in addition to Hong Kong. It also has a new agent in Indonesia. Birkenstock insists on not giving figures but says it encountered delivery problems last year because of strong demand and a positive response from the market to new offerings of thong-sandales and fitness sandals. The development of new machines and investment in its production facilities have eliminated these problems, except for random sizes.
