Brantano Footwear had a consolidated turnover of €67.8 million for the 1st quarter, down from €70.8 million for the same period in 2004, following the dismissal of its Dutch and Danish shops. On a comparable basis, sales rose by 2.2 percent due to growth in the UK. Without the impact of exchange rates, they rose to 3.2 percent. On a same-store basis, sales slipped by 1.0 percent in Belgium and Luxembourg, due in part to January sales that started on a Monday this year rather than on a Saturday. In the UK and the Middle East, sales rose by 4.3 percent on a comparable same store basis and in pounds sterling. During the quarter, one retail outlet was opened in the UK and two in the Middle East. Two were closed in the UK. As of March 31, Brantano has 125 stores in Belgium and Luxembourg, 136 stores in the UK and six franchises in the Middle East.
