Carlo Calenda, Italy's Deputy Minister for Economic Development, has been tapped as the country's new ambassador to the European Union, replacing Stefano Sannino. Calenda had recently been chosen to chair the first committee of the Italian fashion and accessory (“Comitato della moda e dell'accessorio italiano”), launched on Dec. 23, 2015. The industry is therefore losing an important interlocutor. In his role as Deputy Minister for Economic Development, he had worked hard to promote the Italian fashion industry internationally. Calenda, 43, is the first career politician to be named as envoy to Brussels, a role which has been typically assigned to career diplomats. Between 2004 and 2008, he served as deputy executive of Confindustria, the main association representing manufacturing and service companies in Italy, under its former head, Luca de Montezemolo. Prior to his role in Confindustria, he was a marketing director for Sky Italia.
