The underground tunnels of Rome’s Colosseum, known as the hypogeum, have been restored thanks to funds provided by the Italian footwear company Tod’s.

“This startling new view of the hypogeum is testimony to all that happened under the amphitheatre’s great arena from its inauguration in 80 AD up to the last spectacle in 523 AD,” said Alfonsina Russo, the site’s superintendent.

“It has been a very complex job,” she stressed. The 7,000-day restoration involved over 80 specialists.
