David Makin, who founded the JD Sports chain together with John Wardle in 1981, is launching a new shoe store concept in the UK, too. Called Asylum, it will open its first pilot store next month in Wilmslow, Cheshire, featuring the men’s sneakers of brands like Camper. A total of up to 40 doors are envisaged within five years’ time. Makin is being helped in this new venture by a brother, Steven Makin, who has been the buying director of JD Sports, and by Gareth Griffiths, former buyer at JD and at Allsports. Pentland Group is now the controlling shareholder of JD Sports, which was recently renamed as The John David Group, owning Allsports as well.
