Douglas Tompkins, who founded The North Face in 1964 and Esprit in 1968, died in a kayaking accident in Southern Chile on Dec. 8. He was 72 years old. At Esprit, he pioneered the shop-in-shop concept in department stores. Passionate about the environment, he used some of the money from the sale of Esprit to purchase a big property in the Patagonia region of Argentina and Chile in the 1990s to ensure its preservation.
