Canadian footwear retailer Aldo Group said its UK arm has been placed into administration, due to profitability problems and a collapse in retail spending amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Five of its UK stores have been permanently closed, while the eight remaining ones have been handed over to administrators who will explore future options for them. The announcement comes after Aldo’s decision in May to file for bankruptcy protection in Canada, the U.S. and Switzerland and the news that it is winding down its Irish business. Aldo branded footwear will continue to be available in the U.K. on the company’s website, as well as on Asos and Amazon and in Selfridges, House of Fraser and Debenhams stores.
