The fashion online retailer Asos has unveiled plans to invest £90 million (€99.7m - $122.4m) in a new U.K. fulfilment center where it hopes to employ 2,000 people over the next three years.
Asos said the 437,000 square foot warehouse in Staffordshire, West Midlands, which is being developed by AEW and Allianz Real Estate, will be operational within a year, allowing for a gradual ramp up with testing to meet capacity needed for peak trade in 2023.
It added that the site had good road and airport links to serve Asos’ “growing number of customers in the U.K. and around the world”.
Chief executive Nick Beighton said the investment “is a reflection of the confidence Asos has in its future and the quality of the skills and talent available in this well-placed location”.
“When fully up and running in 2023, the site will support our ever-increasing customer demand and enable us to develop our offerings and delivery capabilities even further.”
Asos currently has three fulfilment centers in Barnsley, England, Berlin and Atlanta. Pre-tax profits more than tripled to £142.1 million (€157.5m - $193m) in the year to August 31, 2020, driven by strong sales growth across all geographies as active customers rose to 23.4 million, up by 3.1 million.
