eBay is expanding its Authenticity Guarantee service to sneakers sold on its online platform as it takes on its rivals StockX and Goat in the fast-growing collectible sneakers market.

Through the program, all new and pre-owned collectible sneakers sold on eBay for over $100 in the U.S. will be fully vetted and verified by an independent team of industry experts, the company claims.

The service starts this month with the initial authentication of the most popular sneaker styles and brands on the marketplace, and will ramp to include all sneaker sales of at least $100 by early 2021.

The announcement builds on eBay’s decision to cancel selling fees on any sneaker purchase of $100 or more, to attract top sneaker sellers.

eBay claims to sell a pair of sneakers every 1.5 seconds. On average, there are more than half a million sneaker listings on eBay each day.

In 2019, the platform sold nearly six million sneakers in North America, according to the company.
