Etnies has started a project in which it plants a tree in Costa Rica for every pair of Jameson 2 Eco shoes it sells. The project, “Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree,” is being done in conjunction with Costa Rica's Maleku tribe and Le Reserva foundations. Etnies plans to plants at least 35,000 trees on the Maleku reserve in the northern part of the country this year. The tribe, whose way of life centers on the forest, has had to deal with a decimation of its trees through cattle farming and a rubber-tree war that nearly wiped out the tribe. The U.N. has deemed the Malekus' land a biological corridor to be restored. Costa Rica has set out to be the first carbon-neutral country by 2021, and Pierre-Andre Senizergues, the founder and owner of Etnies, plans to make his company carbon-neutral by 2020.
