Famous Footwear has launched an in-store shoe recycling program at 16 of its stores in the Philadelphia metropolitan region, in conjunction with ShoeBox Recycling. ShoeBox puts recycling bins in the stores where customers can throw away their old ones when they get new ones, then buys the shoes from Famous Footwear, paying by the pound. The money will then go toward the nonprofit Socks for Soldiers, where soldiers sent overseas get free WigWam socks. Donating customers also get an instant $10 off any purchase of $50 or more. ShoeBox Recycling is a for-profit recycler of shoes, and all usable discarded footwear finds its way to those in need.
