French retailers saw their sales of shoes increase by 4.2% in the first three months of 2012, driven by increases of 6.4 percent in mass market shoe retail chains, 11.2 percent in clothing specialty chains and 16.0 percent in hypermarkets and supermarkets. Independent shoe retailers raised their sales by only 1.4 percent in the quarter, and shoe retail chains suffered a decline of 0.8 percent. No figures were available for internet and mail-order retailers.
