Genesco indicates that it achieved a sales increase of 10 percent on a comparable store basis during the fourth quarter ended on Jan. 4 at its Journeys chain of shoe shops in the U.S., thanks in part to a shift from canvas casual styles to retro athletics. Johnston & Murphy grew by 5 percent on a same-store basis, but Lids was off by 14 percent. In the U.K., the Schuh Group raised its sales by only one percent on a comparable basis as it was confronted with an unusually promotional situation, with end-of-season sales starting on Dec. 20.
