German shoe retailers raised their sales in June by 3 percent in value and by 4 percent in volume. July sales were said to have been strong also – mostly in volume – but August may have been worse, partly because of the poor weather. In France, sales grew by 4 percent in August, according to the monthly survey of Michel Fourneyron, offsetting a 4 percent decline in July, but that didn’t prevent a 2 percent drop for the whole Spring/Summer season.
