In Italy, a new sanctioning regime is now in place against the violations concerning the labeling of the materials used in footwear and in the fibers for textile products. The law (published in Gazzetta Ufficiale no. 296 of Dec. 20, 2017), which is in effect from Jan 4, 2018, makes those who actually label the products (footwear and textiles) – i.e. manufacturer, importer and distributor - directly liable for it. Prior to this law, the responsibility was principally on those who sold the products, who often ended up paying for the negligence and omissions of others, typically manufacturers and importers. The amount of the sanctions can go from €3,000 to €20,000.
