In preparation for the back to school business rush, Clarks Shoes is investing £4.6 million (€6.7m-$8.5m) to install 3-D foot measuring devices in a number of its retail stores. The company is partnering with QinetiQ for the development of the foot gauge, which uses six camera systems that measure and quickly provide detailed data on the girth, length and shape of the child’s foot. Both feet can be scanned at the same time. With the new system the company hopes to improve in-store service efficiency. Clarks will additionally use the data from the devices to analyze trends, influence future footwear designs and improve stock control.
