The Marche region and the Italian government each plan to provide €30 million, by contributing €15 million each, to finance the relaunch of the Marche footwear and leather cluster centered around the towns of Fermo and Macerata. The focus of the investments will be on infrastructure. The cluster has suffered significantly lately, largely due to its exposure to countries of the former Soviet Union that have been hit by an economic crisis. According to Alessandro Migliore, head of Fermo’s chapter of the national confederation of artisans (CNA), 86 footwear and leather companies closed in Fermo and 41 footwear firms closed in Macerata last year.
