Jones Apparel Group has finally reached a friendly agreement with the board of directors of Maxwell Shoe Co., which had steadfastly rejected its previous takeover offers; starting at $20 per share on last February, because the price was deemed to be too low. They accepted Jones’ last offer at $23.25 a share. Covering 93.4 percent of the equity, it values Maxwell at about $346 million. Maxwell sells shoes under the Joan & David, Anne Klein, Mootsie Tootsie, Sam & Libby and Dockers brand names.
