José Abugaber Andonie, president of the Footwear Industry of the State of Guanajuato (CICEG), has called on the Mexican government to introduce more stringent measures to protect against counterfeit shoes. His demands follow the seizure in Mexico of 64 tons of smuggled Chinese footwear by customs and federal police. They were confiscated in the same place where another big shipment of smuggled shoes was seized in 2005. While President Calderon’s administration is believed to endorse the law, at present only 5 percent of containers are reportedly examined.
