Leather tanners in Algeria are complaining that hide smugglers, sneaking raw material out over the western and eastern borders, are hurting their business. Some tanners say that their No. 1 problem right now is a lack of hides caused by this smuggling. Algerian law prohibits the export of raw hides from the country; a company run by the government that collected hides and skins throughout Algeria closed four years ago. In the first half of 2011, the country's tannery production fell by 10 percent compared with the figure from 2010.
