Portuguese footwear exports rose by 4.3 percent to €497 million in the first four months of 2021. In April, exports surged by 121 percent compared with a year earlier, when trade was disrupted by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. A total of 22 million pairs of shoes were sold abroad in the first four months of 2021.

Portugal exports more than 95 percent of its footwear production. In the four months to April, exports to Europe grew by 6.8 percent to €418 million, with sales to Germany rising by 40 percent to €123 million.
