Phoenix Footwear more than doubled its sales in the 3rd quarter ended Sept. 25 to $23.2 million, but they would have been flat without the acquisition last July of Altama, a supplier of military boots in the USA. Phoenix, which also owns the SoftWalk, Trotters, HS Trask and Royal Robbins brands, improved its gross margin to 42.4 percent from 41.3 percent in the year-ago period. Pre-tax earnings rose to $2.7 million from $1.7 million.
