Phoenix Footwear, which sells shoes under the Trotters and SoftWalk brand names, reported a 71.6 percent jump in net profit to $548,000 in the third quarter. It was partly due to a non-recurring loss suffered in the year-ago period, but even disregarding the loss, the earnings were 51.6 percent higher than in the same quarter of last year. Sales from continuing operations rose by 14.3 percent to $6,357,000, but the gross margin declined to 38.3 percent from 39.3 percent due to a higher proportion of low-margin licensed footwear.
