Rautureau Apple Shoes, the French company that sells the Pom d’Api, Free Lance, No Name, JB Rautureau and Schmoove brands, is going to eliminate 23 out of 70 jobs on its production site in La Gaubretière in Vendée, France, where it employs a total staff of 258 persons. About half of the affected employees will be converted to other tasks. Three-quarters of the company’s production is outsourced. Only prototyping and production of 100,000 pairs of Free Lance shoes are still produced at La Gaubretière. One of the reasons for the move is a 5 percent drop in the 1st half of 2004 in sales of Free Lance women’s shoes, probably because they carry relatively high prices. Fierce competition in the women’s fashion shoe market and the drop in the dollar’s value have impacted on the results. If sales increase in the 2nd half of this year, costs might be reduced.
