The Portuguese shoemaker Mariano Shoes has opened its first store. The 60-square-meter shop is located in Lisbon and the company plans to open at least two more stores.

Fátima Oliveira, the executive director of the company founded in 1945 in São João da Madeira, explained that the brand aims to be closer to its customers. The company initially focused on mens’ shoes and has recently diversified into women’s footwear.

São João da Madeira along with Felgueiras, Guimarães, Santa Maria da Feira and Oliveira de Azeméis concentrate the bulk of Portugal’s footwear industry. The five municipalities are located close to the city of Porto.
