The Russian state mail operator Russian Post announced a pilot project to set up bonded warehouses, where goods liable to customs can be stored and handled without payment of duty.

In the future, these warehouses could manage half of all sales of foreign online stores present in the country, the Russian Mail forecast.

Bonded warehouses offer lower logistics costs, commented Artem Sokolov, president of the Russian Association of Internet Trade Companies (AITC). The project could cut the prices paid by local customers for imported goods by at least 10 percent, Sokolov estimated.

Shoes, clothes, sporting goods, and cosmetics are the product categories that could benefit most when the network of bonded warehouses is operational, Sokolov pointed out. Shoes and clothes are the most popular goods among Russian customers shopping on foreign online stores, according to AITC.
