Retailing over the internet dropped for the first time in Germany across all product segments in the second quarter of 2014, according to the German E-Commerce and Mail Order Catalog Association (BEVH). It fell by 5.2 percent to €9.5 billion as compared to a very strong quarter a year ago. For all forms of distance retailing, there was a drop of 6.8 percent to €11 billion, with shoes and clothing representing together 37 percent of the total turnover. The situation was even worse for footwear, where the rate of decline reached 44 percent, down to €604 million. The association feels that this was only a temporary drop and that the momentum will resume with the development of multi-channel retailing.
