Revenues grew by 3.3 percent to $45.0 million at Bakers Footwear Group in the first quarter, though the American retail chain nonetheless recorded a net loss of $2.8 million. This was an improvement, however, over a loss of $4.9 million last year. Open-toe footwear was the standout performer as comparable store sales grew by 4.8 percent. The gross profit margin climbed by 2.4 percentage points to 28.2 percent. Comparable store sales in May were up by 3.1 percent. The operating loss came in at $1.9 million, again better than the $4.1 million operating loss last year.
