Schoenenreus, a Dutch discount shoe retailer with more than 200 stores selling sports and other footwear, obtained protection from its creditors yesterday. Its financial troubles were attributed to the uncertainties of Dutch consumers about the European economy and growing competition from online stores. Spread around the Netherlands and Belgium, Schoenenreus' stores remain open for the time being. Schoenenreus was taken over last year by its chief executive, René de Lege, who shifted the emphasis of the offering to focus on sports footwear
