W.L. Gore & Associates, the maker of Gore-Tex laminates, has accelerated the roll-out in Europe of its Surround technology, which offers an enhanced ventilation of the shoe to reduce perspiration. Thanks to the technology, the foot is cooled through the sole and upper. Geox has a similar claim.
The technology has already been used for about a year at a largely experimental level by Clarks of the U.K., Ara Shoes of Germany and Primigi of Italy. With the 2010 spring/summer season, the technology will be used by seven companies ? Clarks, Ara, Hoegl, Igi & Co., Fretz Men, Primigi and Superfit.
Surround is currently being proposed in Europe, targeting the casual shoe market. The group is expected to sell the technology in other regions through partnership agreements. According to Gore-Tex there are no plans to extend the technology to the sporting market.
