Sperry Top-Sider showed off its new SON-R technology at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City last month. The patent-pending system provides sensory feedback in shoes designed for water sports, designed to address issues arising from crossing difficult terrain such as slippery rocks and rough underwater surfaces. The collection will be available next spring. SON-R has anatomically positions pods in a flexible outsole, which work along with a textured insole that has independent chambers that respond to the pressure exerted on the foot. Sperry compares wearing the shoes to being barefoot, only with more protection.
