Stead & Simpson had a pre-tax loss of £3.3 million (€19.4m-$28.9m) for the year ended last Dec. 30, compared with a profit of £5.8 million in 2005, as sales declined to £141.5 million (€199m-$297m) from £138.1 million, according to published reports. Another more upmarket British shoe retailer, Russell & Bromley, did better instead. Its pre-tax profit increased to £9.87 million (€13.9m-$20.7m) from £9.27 million on 6.6 percent higher sales of £73.84 million (€104m-$155m).
