Suspected of having committed suicide, Kate Spade, 55, was found dead on June 5 in her apartment in New York. Her husband and partner, Andy Spade, told The New York Times that she suffered of depression. Together, they launched two years ago a new brand of shoes and accessories, Frances Valentine. After the Kate Spade brand became famous for its competitively priced box-shaped handbags, they sold the business to Neiman Marcus in two stages, in 1999 and 2006. The brand was then sold to Liz Clairborne, and it was acquired last year by the former Coach, now called Tapestry, for $2.4 billion.
