Sustainable Origin, the sustainability certification of the Brazilian leather-footwear chain, has been reformulated. The Sustainable Origin program was launched six years ago to certify the production in the footwear industry in the areas of environmental, social, cultural, and economic sustainability. The program was developed by the Brazilian Association of the Companies of Components for Leather, Footwear and Manufactured Goods (Assintecal), the Brazilian Footwear Industries Association (Abicalçados), and Instituto by Brazil (IBB). There are currently 143 companies involved in the program, of which 17 footwear companies and 126 manufacturers of supplies and components for shoes. The repositioning of Sustainable Origin, which was presented on Jan. 15, involves the optimization of the certification levels as well as a new logo, among other things. The details and updates of the program are available at
