The chamber of commerce of Alicante, the region in Spain most noted for its footwear industry, is changing tacks, planning more promotional activity next year for its tourism industry than for footwear. Though typically footwear has been the region’s priority, exports from manufacturers there went down by 16.7 percent in the first nine months of 2008, and the chamber is planning just five projects specifically geared toward it in 2009. Tourism is the focus of nine projects.
