The Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) and TÜV Süd, the German-based firm specialized in safety testing, have released the Global Footwear Product Safety Guide. The manual, which is claimed to be the first of its kind, covers chemical and physical testing requirements and suggests certain protocols for the footwear industry. Previous FDRA guidebooks only covered chemical testing. FDRA said one of the problem in the industry is that companies are interpreting safety regulations differently, causing confusion at the factory level and affecting the ability to make products safer for consumers. With this guide, the FDRA intends to provide the industry with a template that is understandable and can be executed across all companies. The guide helps understand exactly what chemicals are used in the production of footwear and where those chemicals are regulated worldwide. Also included in the guide are physical testing guidelines ensuring that companies understand all the various physical testing requirements either required by law or needed to ensure the production of high quality footwear. The guide can be downloaded at FDRA's website. FDRA is the largest footwear trade association in the U.S.
