The German shoe retailing market is increasingly consolidating. Between 2010 and 2017, the number of retail companies operating in the sector shrank from 7,250 to around 3,800, according to data published by the Federal Statistical Office. However, the decline did not have a significant impact on the number of individual points of sale and employees in the footwear sector. Both remained largely stable because of the expansion of the major shoe chains, said the German shoe retailers' association, BDSE, while smaller firms left the market due to an increased competition or the lack of a successor for the former owner.
