The Jones Group reported total revenues of $855 million for the second quarter, down from $887 million in the same period a year ago. The inclusion of Kurt Geiger for a full quarter helped to improve the group's gross margin by 1.8 percentage points to 38.2 percent, but the operating margin declined to 2.5 percent from 5.1 percent in the year-ago period. Net profits rose to $8.4 million from $5.4 million, but they declined after eliminating extraordinary charges for both periods. A negative operating loss of $16 million was recorded on sales of $195.5 million in the domestic wholesale footwear and accessories segment. Domestic retail operations, which include Nine West, had an operating loss of $3.0 million on sales of $150.6 million. International wholesale and retail generated revenues of $75.4 million and $97.3 million, and both of these segments were profitable.
