The Skechers Foundation has announced that its 8th annual 2016 Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk has raised more than $1.6 million for children with special needs and education. Celebrities at the event included Brooke Burke-Charvet, a longtime Skechers supporter, as well as boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, actor Ian Ziering, best known for playing one of the leading characters in the Beverly Hills, 90210 TV series, and others. The event was supported by Nickelodeon as headlining sponsor and NBC4 Southern California as its new media sponsor. Additional sponsors included, among others, Body Glove, Kids Foot Locker, Wells Fargo, and Chevron. The number of participants reached a new record of 12,000 people while the Walk's reach on social media exceeded four million viewers, Skechers said. Since its launch in 2009, the Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk has raised more than $7 million. Funds support The Friendship Foundation, an organization that helps children with special needs and their families via one-on-one peer mentoring, recreational programs, field trips and sporting events. The Foundation also helps educational foundations committed to academic programs and improving libraries and school technology.
