The Spanish Association of Footwear Components (AEC) has written to the country's central tax authority to complain about delays in refunds of the value added tax (VAT) to exporting companies. According to the association, some of its 600 member firms are owed a combined total of more than €6 million. The trade association is calling on the government to adopt measures to solve the situation, stressing that it is jeopardizing several businesses in the sector, especially small and medium companies. The AEC also told local media that in addition to longer-than-usual delays for VAT to be refunded, some footwear components firms have reported undergoing inspections by tax officials that might result in further delays in the VAT repayment process.
