There is some cautious optimism in the Spanish shoe industry. A survey conducted in January and February among the managers of 509 companies in the sector showed that 78 percent of them hope that their sales will remain stable or improve in the course of this year. Companies that work with men's shoes were the most optimistic ones with their regard to their domestic sales. Producers of women's shoes were instead most positive about their sales abroad. Furthermore, 70 percent of the companies predict that the prices of their shoes will remain stable, especially when it comes to men's footwear. With regard to employment levels, only 10 percent foresee a decline and 10 percent anticipate an increase. The study was carried out by the Spanish National Footwear Technological Institute Inescop, in collaboration with Fice, the Spanish shoe industry federation.
